About this data

Updated Sep 2026

Figures are shown as the source publishes them, and anything we calculate is explained below. How the data is made Report an error General information, not financial advice.

What the index measures

The Altcoin Season Index is a breadth measure. Take the fifty largest coins by market capitalisation, leave out stablecoins and wrapped or staked versions of other assets, and count how many of them returned more than Bitcoin over the last ninety days. The count, as a percentage, is the index. Seventy-five or more is altcoin season: three in four of the majors are beating Bitcoin. Twenty-five or less is Bitcoin season. The middle is neither.

It answers a narrower question than "are alts up". Alts can be up a great deal in a market where Bitcoin is up more, and that is not an altcoin season, it is a Bitcoin bull market with passengers. The index only rises when capital is rotating down the risk curve faster than it is rotating into Bitcoin.

How to read it

  • The level is breadth, not size: An index of 80 means most majors are ahead of Bitcoin; it says nothing about by how much. The two lists above the table show the margins.
  • The 30 and 7 day readings lead: Rotation shows up in the short horizons first. A 90 day index still in Bitcoin season while the 7 day reading is above 75 is what the start of a rotation looks like.
  • The direction matters more than the level: An index rising through 50 has told you more than an index sitting at 70.
  • Bitcoin's own return is the bar: The fourth print in the header is Bitcoin's 90 day return. When it is deeply negative, an index of 60 can mean alts fell less, not that they rose.

What it cannot tell you

  • Survivorship: The history uses today's fifty. Coins that fell out of the top fifty since then are not in the line, which flatters altcoins in the back-history a little.
  • Concentration: Fifty coins with equal weight treat a $2B token and a $200B one the same. That is the point of a breadth measure, and also its limit.
  • Venue: Prices are Binance's. For a coin thinly traded there, the return can differ from its deepest market by a few points.
  • Timing: Altcoin seasons historically arrive late in a cycle and end quickly. An index at 80 is a description of the last ninety days, not a promise about the next ninety.

Not investment advice

Breadth describes where the market has been rotating. It says nothing about whether the rotation continues. Nothing on this page is a recommendation to buy or sell anything.

Questions

Why does this differ from other altcoin season indexes?

Three reasons. The universe is read live and screened here, so the fifty can differ by a few names. Prices are Binance closes rather than a blended index. And the reading is computed at the moment you load the page rather than once a day, so it moves intraday.

Which coins are excluded?

Stablecoins, and tokens that are wrapped, staked or bridged versions of another asset, such as wrapped Bitcoin or staked Ether. Their return is another asset's return and would count it twice. Exchange tokens and layer ones are included.

What counts as altcoin season?

Seventy-five percent or more of the fifty beating Bitcoin over ninety days, the same threshold the original index uses. Twenty-five or less is Bitcoin season.

How often does it update?

On every page load, and every fifteen minutes while the tab is open. Daily closes only change at 00:00 UTC, but the current day's partial candle moves with the market.
